[2] Theophylact Simocatta,
Histories 3.7.6 (which in fact exemplifies the use of this verb with the accusative case); cf. de Boor (123) and Whitby (82). The story here concerns a forward detachment of Roman soldiers who in 589 capture two Persian scouts dressed as Romans. The scouts tell of a nearby group of Persian fighters, arms down and resting unawares. But after following the captives to the purported location, the credulous Romans are themselves ambushed and taken prisoner; see related entries at

alpha 3523.
