The orators used [the word] "principal" of borrowed money, the money which some call "capital", kephalaion, according to a certain custom of usage.[1] Demosthenes in the [speech] Against Nikostratos [writes]: "he lent money to Archippos [but the latter] was not able to repay it, either the interest or the principal".[2] It is also used for "old". Aeschines in the [speech] Against Timarchos [writes]: "but Solon, who of the law-givers was especially well-reputed, wrote in ancient style."[3] And once more: "so sensible were those ancient orators, Pericles, Themistocles and Aristides."[3] But [archaion] is used in comic poets for "simple".[4]
