According to
Philochorus FGrH 328 F19 there was a place (topos) called Aretesion in Attica, so called because Theseus called down curses (arai) on his enemies there. However,
Plutarch (
Theseus 35), calls it the Araterion; and neither author makes any mention of a plain. Since
Plutarch adds that its location was the village of Gargettos (present-day Ieraka), NE of
Athens in the dip between Mt.
Hymettos and Mt. Pentelikon, the term "plain" would not be inapposite, however.
