Notes:
The headword is presumably extracted from the quotation given.
[1] A loose and garbled version of
Agathias,
Histories 2.22 (p.112 Niebuhr): 'to the river Phasis' should be 'to Telephis' (a city of that name), the Suda's grammatically impossible
tw=n e)kei/nh| dusxwriw=n should be
th\n e)kei/nh| dusxwri/an, and a crucial 'not' is missing. During the Lazic War (541-562), in 555 CE the Sasanian general Mihr-Mihroe (Mermeroes in Greek; cf.
mu 637), decides
not to advance through rough terrain to Telephis (in Lazike/
Kolchis, at the eastern end of the Black Sea, Barrington Atlas map 88 grid A2; cf.
sigma 793 notes) and moves his army safely across the Phasis (
phi 122 and
phi 124) instead; cf. Frendo (55-56). On the dating of these events, see Cameron (143-144).
