Headword: *)apomuri/zw
Adler number: alpha,3446
Translated headword: I wipe off ointment
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] I blunt.
Greek Original:
*)apomuri/zw: a)postomi/zw.
Notes:
The headword verb is attested with this meaning in Nicetas of Paphlagonia (561c) and in Theodorus Studites (PG 99.1664 b,c); it refers there to the custom of wiping a fragrant liquid off the relics of a saint to use it for healing purposes. See also Constantine Porphyrogenitus, De contionibus militaribus 8.28 (aorist participle).
In this instance, however, a)pomuri/zw is most probably a scribal error or other orthographical corruption of a)pomuouri/zw, which is itself a common, though incorrect, form of a)pomeiouri/zw, "I dull the edge"; cf. E.A. Socrates, Greek Lexicon of the Roman and Byzantine Periods.
Adler's apparatus notes no variants in the manuscripts for this entry.
