Adler number: alpha,3433
Translated headword: scrapers of strickles
Vetting Status: high
Translation: But darkened [means] reared in the shade.
Greek Original:*)apo/maktra skuta/lwn, a)peskothme/na de\ e)skiotrofhme/na.
Notes:
Evidently deriving from comment on
Aristophanes fr.712 Kock (now 667 K.-A.):
a)po/maktr' a)peskotw/mena, "scrapers darkened".
Hesychius defines these "scrapers" as strickles, wooden implements for levelling off (sc. grain etc.) in measures, and this is also one of the meanings of
skuta/lh (see LSJ s.v.).
See already (with explicit mention of
Aristophanes) at
alpha 3061, and again (likewise) at
epsilon 3152.
