Apeliotes is the Ionic form, used also in Attic, but
Apheliotes occurs later in Attic (LSJ s.v.: web address 1). Other Ionic dialects lost the initial "h" earlier than Attic did, giving
elios instead of
helios for "sun." In Latin, Catullus and
Pliny the Elder use the word (Catullus 26.3 at web address 2,
Pliny Natural History 2.51 at web address 3); but it is unclear whether it should be spelled with h or not. LSJ also mention instances in Aulus
Gellius (see web address 4) and
Seneca.
[2]
Posidippus fr. 41 Kock, now 42 K.-A. Ionic for
ephelis "cover, lid:" derived either from
helos "nail-head" or from
helios "sun."
