Adler number: alpha,3106
Translated headword: withdrew
Vetting Status: high
Translation: "He withdrew to Mannos,[1] having both violated pledges[2] that he had given to a king/emperor, and having trampled oaths that he had sworn."
Greek Original:*)apexw/rhsen: o( de\ para\ *ma/nnon a)pexw/rhse decia/s te paraba\s, a(\s basilei= e)/dwke, kai\ o(/rkous path/sas, ou(\s w)/mosen.
Notes:
The lexicographer attributes this quotation to Arrian in
delta 233 and
pi 782 (and quotes it again, without attribution, at
mu 156). Jacoby (FGrH 156 F136) assigns it to an unknown book of Arrian's
Parthika; and it is Arrian,
Parthika fr. 49 Roos & Wirth.
[1] Jacoby reads
para\ *ma/nnou "from Mannos" rather than
para\ *ma/nnon "to Mannos" (as is translated here), which arguably makes better sense.
[2] For this transferred sense of
decia/, literally a clasp of the right hand, see generally LSJ s.v., 2.
