Dionysius] ordered that he be thrown into the quarries.[2] He later recalled him, in the hope that he would praise his poems, but he, not wishing to praise them, made the statement above.

Philoxenus of Cythera (c.435-380); OCD(4) pp.1137-8, s.v. 'Philoxenos(1)'. While he was resident at the court of
Dionysius I, he slighted the bad verses of the tyrant and for this reason was sent to the quarries. The story is told by
Diodorus Siculus 15.6.2-5 (web address 1 below).
Philoxenus seems to have spent some time in the stone quarries, for
Athenaeus (
Deipnosophists 1.6F = 1.11 Kaibel) records the story that he was sent there for seducing
Dionysius' mistress.
