The entry refers to Aristophanes' metaphor (Clouds 955) for taking the supreme gamble in the hour of greatest danger; discussed by Taillardat [see Bibliography] 487-8, cf. 10. It is also used in Aristophanes' fragment 673, and by Phrynichus (see alpha 2383 and kappa 1633). All verbs here can be used of rolling the die (in the sense of tossing it upwards). All are in the aorist tense of the infinitive, appropriate for an action performed only once rather than for past action.
