Headword: *)aneskeua/santo
Adler number: alpha,2321
Translated headword: they dismantled themselves
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. A way of saying] becoming refugees and, in effect, exhausted.[1]
Also[2] [sc. attested is the related perfect participle] a)neskeuasme/noi, [meaning] having put on[3] their armor.
Greek Original:
*)aneskeua/santo: to\ a)nasta/tous gene/sqai kai\ oi(=on a)pei/pasqai. kai\ *)aneskeuasme/noi, ta\ o(/pla e)ndusa/menoi.
Notes:
The first part of the entry is adapted from Harpokration s.v. The headword -- aorist middle, third person plural, of a)naskeua/zw -- is evidently quoted from somewhere.
[2] = Photius, Lexicon alpha1876 Theodoridis, but dative (rather than these nominative) plurals in Lexica Segueriana 92.1. There is such a dative in [Demosthenes] 49.68, but it refers, quite differently, to financial bankruptcy.
[3] So the transmitted text, but we surely need "taken off"; in Greek a change of just one letter (from en- to ek-).
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; military affairs
