Polybius 3.87.1 (web address 1). In early July 216 BCE (Walbank, p. 421), during the Second Punic War (218-201 BCE), Hannibal (cf.
alpha 2452) withdrew eastward following his stunning victory in the Battle of Lake Trasimene (Barrington Atlas map 42 grid C2; cf. Briscoe, pp. 48-49), encamped near the Adriatic Sea, and endeavored to restore the health of his men and horses.
