Adler number: alpha,1681
Translated headword: defender
Vetting Status: high
Translation: [*)amu/nths] and a)lkh/sths ["brave man"]: the terms [are] tragic and Aeschylean.
Greek Original:*)amu/nths kai\ *)alkh/sths, tragika\ kai\ *ai)sxulhra\ ta\ o)no/mata.
Notes:
Same entry in
Photius; also
Phrynichus,
Praeparatio sophistica fr. 175.
Neither word -- the first a favourite of
Herodotus' -- actually occurs in what survives of
Aeschylus. They have, nevertheless, been registered as
adespota of his. Note, however, that the adjective
*ai)sxulhro/s (as opposed to
*ai)xu/leios) occurs only here, and Reitzenstein suggested emending
*ai)sxulhra/ to
sklhra/ ("harsh").
