Notes:
OCD(4) s.v. Amyclae (p.76).
Amyklai/Amyclae is an area on the bank of the Eurotas river just south of Sparta. It is mentioned in Homer as an important center in the kingdom of Menelaos, but it was laid waste in the eighth century BCE by invading Dorians and incorporated into Spartan territory. In the classical period it was therefore one of the five "obes", or villages, of Sparta (as well as an important cult-center in its own right): see e.g. Xenophon, Hellenica 4.5.11, and generally N.F. Jones, Public Organization in Ancient Greece (Philadelphia 1987) 118-123.
