Epicharmus [
epsilon 2766] fr. 223 Kaibel, now 201 K.-A. The phenomenon (more commonly known as apocope) itself, however, predates him: LSJ notes an instance of, precisely,
a)/lfi in one of the
Homeric Hymns. Chantraine s.v. supposes that
a)/lfi was the original form, an old athematic noun which may have had *
a)lfatos as its genitive with an alternation of
i/n.
