Aristophanes, Wasps 850. Scholiasts to the line -- not cited here -- saw its point. As Philokleon is a juror, his "place" is not the farm it might have been in another context but his voting-tablet (pinakion); a layer of wax on it enabled him to indicate, in trials without fixed penalty, whether he favoured the one proposed by the plaintiff (long line) or the defendant (short line).
