Headword: Psuchetai
Adler number: psi,160
Translated headword: grows cold
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning [he/she/it] is made cold, is quenched. In the Epigrams: "when the flame at festivals devours all the offerings with envious madness, it grows cold of its own accord."[1]
Greek Original:
Psuchetai: anti tou psuchrainetai, marainetai. en Epigrammasi: hê phlox en teletais, hote thumata panta laphuxei, phthonerêi maniêi psuchetai automatôs.
Notes:
The headword is presumably extracted from the quotation given (though there are many instances elsewhere).
[1] Greek Anthology 5.239.5-6 (Paul the Silentiary), where the comma is better after mani/h| than (as in Adler) lafu/cei. In line 5 the Anthology mss read kai\ flo/c. The beginning of line 6 as transmitted by the Suda is unmetrical: another adjective, thcimelei= ("limb-wasting") is proffered in the margin of ms A, but the Anthology mss themselves are signficantly different: forbh=s h)pani/h| ("through lack of sustenance") -- a reading which would, in fact, justify Adler's punctuation.
