In the Holy Scripture [this word means] the vicissitudes of circumstances. David [says]: "we were filled full of your mercy early on, Lord."[1]
'Early' is all the interval [of time] after the cockcrow. When he says 'having risen early',[2] so that he might not seem to be saying contradictory things -- the resurrection being unseen and unknown -- one must put a punctuation mark, 'and having risen'; and thus add: 'early, on the first [day] of the week, he appeared to Mary'.
