The headword is an archaic/poetic word, cognate with Sanskrit mádhu 'sweet, sweet drink, honey', Old English medu 'mead', Slavic med[ucaron] 'honey', etc. Mead was the Indoeuropeans' original alcoholic beverage; when they entered the Mediterranean world and encountered grape wine, they either called it by their old name or borrowed the local word, which appears as voi=nos in Greek and vinum in Latin.
