Amphisbêtein
Adler number: alpha,1765
Translated headword: to claim
Vetting Status: high
Translation: [To claim] and to counter-claim. Whenever someone appears to have died childless, but someone [else] claims to be his son, this man is said to be "claiming" the estate. But if he does not introduce himself as a son of the deceased, but says that the estate belongs to him by descent in another way, the laws order him to "counter-claim". In both situations, however, there is an opportunity for refutation.
