CS 101 Introduction to Computers Spring 2022 Syllabus - Makeup Policies

Here is the form to request a makeup for a Lab Test.

If you miss a lab exam, we do allow for makeup lab exams, a chance to take a lab exam at a different time than normally scheduled. Whether the makeup is allowed depends on whether the student has documentation of a UK-accepted excuse or whether the student wants to use their Free Makeup. If they do not have an excuse and have already used their Free Makeup then no makeup is allowed.

This is NOT another chance at taking the test if you don't like your score! Makeups are for people who were physically NOT present at the test.

Any requests for a makeup exam MUST be made within one week after the time of the scheduled exam. If you know ahead of time that you are going to have to miss the exam, contact Dr. Keen immediately.

You are eligible for a MAKE UP if you have one the following situations:

  1. You missed the normally scheduled lab exam or were more than 20 minutes late to the normally scheduled exam due to a UNIVERSITY DEFINED EXCUSED ABSENCE and have DOCUMENTATION of that absence. In this case, you should fill out the MAKE UP REQUEST FORM online, write down the time and place of the makeup exam from the web page, then mail your excuse documentation to Dr. Keen.
  2. If you miss a lab exam without a UK-accepted excuse, you can use your "Free Makeup" to request a makeup exam. This is a privilege every student has ONE time during the semester. It is not transferrable to another student. It is only good on Lab Exams, not lecture tests, not attendance. If you choose to use your "Free Makeup", you must enter that on the Makeup Request form online. This must be done within one week after your scheduled exam time. After that time you will not be allowed to do a makeup.

Opportunity for a REtake

A RETAKE is different from a makeup. A retake is only allowed in the following situation:
You attended the normally scheduled lab exam but were unable to submit any files due to a problem with the hardware. This means something SEVERE like the machine rebooted in the middle of the test, that someone pulled your power cord out. It does NOT include something like you opened a file using a browser instead of the correct application. This does NOT include not being able to find your file! Your TA MUST verify a severe hardware problem took place or you will NOT be allowed a makeup. If it is YOUR mistake, you will NOT be allowed a makeup. Make sure you tell your TA about the problem as soon as it occurs. Make sure your TA has explained the lab problem you had to Dr. Keen. In this case, you should fill out the MAKE UP REQUEST FORM, write down the time and place of the makeup exam from the web page, and show up for the scheduled exam.

A REtake will include some penalty because you have already seen one version of the lab test. The amount of the penalty is influenced by the reason for the need for a REtake. It can be up to 50% of the possible points.

If you schedule a makeup or retake exam and then miss it, you don't get a second chance at it.

If abuse of this policy is detected (for example, students with excuses for missing for every lab test), the privilege will be denied.
