Notes:
[1]
Diodorus Siculus fr. 6 Walton (30 Dindorf).
[2] (Adler cites
Ambrosian Lexicon 1052.) This and the participle which follows are again quotations, presumably.
[3] Adler tentatively attributed this quotation to
Aelian. In fact, as a TLG search reveals, it has been identified as a fragment of John of
Antioch (295 Roberto). Although also attributed to John, this fragment is included as part of
Priscus fr. 36.2 Blockley (338-339). It is also in fr. 73 Carolla (102) as one of her
fragmenta dubia, crediting not
Priscus but John of
Antioch. The context is the execution, carried out by Ricimer's troops, of Majorian (emperor in the west, 457-461; cf. PLRE II s.v. Maiorianus) at Dertona in Liguria (August 2, 461). On Ricimer, see PLRE II s.v. Ricimer(2).
[4] Quotation not identified by Adler but identifiable via the TLG as
Procopius,
History of the Wars of Justinian 1.25.3 (the participle, though, should be singular; cf. web address 1), on John the Cappadocian, more fully at
iota 469; cf. Kaldellis (68) and
alpha 2407.
