The headword term occurs first (as a nominative plural) in Homer, Iliad 18.593, of virgin girls; they are "oxen-producing" in the sense of being likely to attract suitors who bring oxen as presents. See generally LSJ s.v. Alphesiboia is also a proper name (that of the mother of Adonis) in mythology.
