Translation:
All festivals are called this. Also [sc. attested is] Theoria, a name of a whore.
Greek Original:
*qewri/ai: ou(/tw kalou=ntai pa=sai ai( panhgu/reis. kai\ *qewri/a, o)/noma po/rnhs.
Note:
Theoria is personified, as a non-speaking character, in Aristophanes' Peace: see web address 1. This fact in itself would not argue for a connection between the two parts of the present entry, especially since, in the second half, 'Theoria' is perhaps an error for Theoris, the courtesan loved by Sophocles (Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 13.591F-592B and 598C-D = 13.61 and 71 Kaibel); note, nevertheless, the assertion of a scholiast to line 706 of Peace that the parts of both Theoria and her companion Opora were taken by hetairai.
