Headword: *prwtoklisi/a
Adler number: pi,2964
Translated headword: first-couch rights
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the first seat.
Greek Original:
*prwtoklisi/a: h( prw/th kaqe/dra.
Notes:
Accented in this way, the word is the nominative singular form of a feminine noun. As such it is otherwise unattested, although the noun does appear elsewhere in other cases and numbers, most prominently in the Gospels (Matthew 23:6, Mark 12:39, Luke 20:46, etc.); the entry perhaps stems from commentary to such passages. Accented differently (prwtokli/sia), the word would be a neuter plural with roughly the same connotation attested at 2 Maccabees 4:21.
Normally the headword refers to a position of honor at a banquet, whereas the terminology of the gloss refers to the privilege of front-row seating at meetings and performances; compare generally pi 2379, pi 2381.
Adler reports that the lemma appears at Lexicon Ambrosianum 1301.
