Adler number: omicroniota,187
Translated headword: Oite, Oita
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Name of a mountain in Lakedaimonia. Also [sc. attested is] Oitaian, [the adjective] from the same mountain.
Greek Original:
*oi)/th: o)/noma o)/rous e)n *lakedaimoni/a|. kai\ *oi)tai=os, a)po\ tou= au)tou= o)/rous.
Note:
"Lakedaimonia" is textually sound but must nevertheless, as Gaisford noted, represent an inherited textual corruption. Mt Oita is in central Greece, at the intersection of Ainis, Doris and Malis. (Stephanus of Byzantium s.v.: "Oite, a mountain near Trachis.") The fact that Doris was the purported homeland of the Lakedaimonioi (Spartans) may lie at the heart of the problem.
