[Meaning] son of Leotychos.
*lewtuxi/dhs: o( tou= *lewtu/xou.
A reasonable definition of this name if construed as a patronymic. But in fact the name which occurs in the historical record is Leotychides itself, notably as the name of that of two Eurypontid kings of
Sparta. For Leotychidas (sic: Doric dialect) II, who reigned c.491-469, see OCD(4) s.v. The man who would have become Leotychidas III at the end of the fifth century was rejected on suspicion of being an illegitimate son of the renegade Athenian Alkibiades (
alpha 1280) rather than his notional father
Agis II; this brought about the unexpected succession of Agesilaos (
alpha 229).
