Headword: *kapanh=tai
Adler number: kappa,326
Translated headword: cords? charioteers?
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[no gloss]
Greek Original:
*kapanh=tai.
Notes:
The headword, attested only here, has the typical form of a nomen agentis ending in -hths (plural -htai). Its LSJ entry (web address 1) implicitly links it with another hapax, kapa/nia, which Hesychius kappa687 glosses as a(rpedo/nes ('cords', 'snares'); hence kapanh=tai might be 'cord-men' or 'snare-men'. But perhaps a better alternative is to connect it with kapa/nh, "chariot"; hence, 'chariot-men', though "Chariot-man" is also a likely etymology of the name of the hero Kapaneus.
Also possible is a connection with skapanh/ths ('digger'); cf. ps.-Zonaras 1650.
