Notes:
[1] The headword is present participle, masculine nominative singular, of the verb e)pikale/w (cf. epsilon 2349, epsilon 2351). It is probably extracted from the first quotation given here, though there are extant alternatives from Lysias and Demosthenes onwards. For the second glossing participle, e)gkalw=n, cf. scholia on Lucian 2.9 and 111.27 Rabe.
[2] Richard Porson (1759-1808) related this quotation -- correctly, in Adler's opinion -- to John of Antioch fr.90 FHG (4.575a) now 172 Roberto.
[3] Procopius, Secret History 16.19 (translation at web address 1, Greek text at web address 2). Procopius describes how the empress Theodora (cf. alpha 956 note) ordered a magistrate to arrest a young nobleman of the Green faction (cf. alpha 3460 note) who had denigrated her, but to charge him with sodomy instead of slander; cf. Kaldellis (74) and alpha 3151.
