The proverb[1] [functions] not in terms of an opposition,[2] but aims to say "o sweet traits". It is a proverb, as [applied to] someone/something addressed. Thus the comic poet Plato [used it] in the Phaôn. An old man there is in love with a girl piper [and says]: "o golden hairband! o for my luxuriant ways! o sweet elbow!"[3] As if someone might say, "o sweet arm".

Glukus ankôn: ou kat' enantiôsin hê paroimia, alla boulomenos eipein, ô glukea êthê. esti de paroimia, hôs epiphônoumenon. houtôs echrêsato Platôn ho kômikos en tôi Phaôni. gerôn d' autôi hupokeitai erôn aulêtridos: ô chrusoun anadêma, ô toisin emois trupheroisi tropois, ô glukus ankôn. hôs ei tis legoi, ô glukus pêchus.
