Agathias,
Histories 1.13 (here abridged). Prior to attacking the city of
Luca (modern-day
Lucca, in Tuscany, central Italy; Barrington Atlas map 41 grid C2) in the autumn of 553 CE, the Byzantine general Narses (cf.
nu 42) released a group of Lucchesi hostages completely unharmed to the townspeople. Narses held the hope (which was ultimately futile) that the gesture would sway the city's loyalty from the Franks to the Romans and that he could thereby avoid a prolonged siege; cf.

Agathias's account; see Cameron (51), Ites (281), and Stein (606).
