Adler number: epsilon,2452
Translated headword: response
Vetting Status: high
Translation: [Meaning] approach.[1] "He sends John, so that he might employ a forward-guard and might learn in advance the response of the barbarians."[2]
Greek Original:*)epi/lusin: e)/fodon. o( de\ pe/mpei *)iwa/nnhn, w(s a)\n profulakh=| xrh/soito kai\ prokatama/qoi th\n e)pi/lusin tw=n barba/rwn.
Notes:
[1] The headword is accusative case of the noun
e)pi/lusis. The best-known instance --
Aeschylus,
Seven Against Thebes 134:
e)pi/lusin fo/bwn, e)pi/lusin di/dou -- means 'release' and so makes a bad fit with this glossing synonym. The gloss would be more appropriate to
e)ph/lusin "approach, assault," which is homophonous with
e)pi/lusin and also more suitable to the passage quoted. Cf.
epsilon 2176,
epsilon 2177, and especially
epsilon 2178 (the last a fragment of
Menander Protector). But
e)pi/lusin is required by alphabetical order here in the Suda.
[2] Attributed by Charles Burney (1757-1818) to
Menander Protector, and accepted as such by Blockley: his fr. 35.1.
